Health insurers' mental healthcare reimbursement overview 2026
Reimbursement for non-contracted mental healthcare varies per health insurer and per policy. In 2026, reimbursement rates range from over 70% to below 55% of the maximum tariff set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
The overview below shows, per insurer, which policies are relatively more or less favorable for reimbursement of non-contracted mental healthcare, based on publicly available policy conditions and data from the Contractvrije Psychiater.
Policy types: how much freedom of choice do you have?
Budget policy
This is usually the most affordable option, but with the most limitations in provider choice. For non-contracted care, a lower percentage of the NZa tariff is typically reimbursed.
In-kind policy (naturapolis)
For non-contracted care, insurers generally reimburse a portion of the NZa tariff (often around 60–70%, depending on the policy conditions).
Combination policy
This is a mix of in-kind and reimbursement-based care. These policies often offer more freedom of choice for non-contracted care and typically reimburse a higher percentage than budget or in-kind policies.
The exact reimbursement always depends on the specific insurer and policy.
How are these percentages and amounts calculated?
Health insurers reimburse non-contracted mental healthcare as a percentage of the maximum tariff set by the NZa.
For rTMS treatments in 2026:
- NZa tariff: €158.74 per session
- Procedure code: OV0126 – Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
The amounts per rTMS session shown in the overview are indicative. They are calculated by applying the insurer’s reimbursement percentage to the NZa tariff. Actual reimbursement may vary depending on the individual situation.
Explanation of the color coding
The color coding in the overview is intended as a visual aid when comparing policy conditions for non-contracted mental healthcare.
- Green: policies with a relatively higher reimbursement percentage for non-contracted mental healthcare based on available policy conditions.
- Red: policies with relatively lower reimbursement and/or additional requirements, such as prior authorization.
The colors do not reflect the quality of a health insurer, but only indicate conditions that may affect reimbursement for rTMS treatment. Reimbursement always depends on the individual policy, medical indication, and the insurer’s assessment.
Important
Health insurers Zorg en Zekerheid and DSW / Stad Holland currently do not offer reimbursement for rTMS treatment within non-contracted mental healthcare. In such cases, you may consider switching to a contracted provider or covering the treatment costs yourself.

Make sure you’re properly insured for rTMS therapy
If you’re considering starting treatment at rTMS International, it’s important to check whether your health insurance covers the costs (fully or partially). Below, we explain what to look out for.
Polis-type: How much freedom of choice do you have?
- Budgetpolis
The cheapest option, but with the most limitations. Non-contracted care, such as at rTMS International, is often only partially reimbursed. The difference — excluding the deductible — is covered by rTMS International. - Naturapolis
For non-contracted care, such as at rTMS International, typically only 60–70% is reimbursed. The difference — excluding the deductible — is covered by rTMS International. - Combinatiepolis
A mix of in-kind and reimbursement-based coverage. Often offers slightly more freedom of choice than an in-kind policy. For care at rTMS International, this is the best option (70–76% reimbursement).
Restrictions and authorizations
Some insurers require prior authorization before they reimburse rTMS treatment. While this may seem straightforward, in practice it often leads to delays and uncertainty:
- Loss of time: The application process can take weeks. In the meantime, you often cannot start treatment.
- No guarantee of approval: The insurer may reject the request, even if you meet all the criteria.
- Bureaucracy: You (or your therapist) are required to submit various documents, such as referral letters, treatment plans, or records of previous treatments.
- Stress: Uncertainty about reimbursement can be mentally exhausting, especially at a time when you need help the most.
