Costs of rTMS treatment
Reimbursed care (basic health insurance)
For treatment-resistant depression (where at least two evidence-based treatments have had insufficient effect), rTMS treatment is generally covered by basic health insurance. In this case, health insurers reimburse part of the treatment in accordance with the policy conditions for non-contracted mental healthcare.
You will receive an invoice from us, which you can submit to your health insurer. Your insurer will then reimburse a percentage of the applicable NZa rate. The mandatory deductible applies.
The full treatment and NZa rate remains applicable to the care we provide. However, we deliberately choose not to charge you, as the client, for the portion that is not reimbursed by your health insurer. This helps keep treatment accessible and prevents unexpected costs other than the mandatory deductible.
Explanation of reimbursement for non-contracted care
rTMS International does not have contracts with health insurers. Insurers therefore reimburse a percentage of the maximum rate for this treatment as determined by the NZa. This percentage varies depending on your insurance policy and is generally between approximately 53% and 78%.
This does not mean that our treatment is provided at a lower rate. The full rate remains applicable; we cover the non-reimbursed portion ourselves to ensure that appropriate treatment remains the priority, rather than differences between insurers or insurance policies.
Some health insurers have additional requirements for reimbursement of rTMS treatment, such as prior authorisation. Based on current policy conditions, this regularly applies to people insured with a.s.r. (Ditzo / De Amersfoortse), Aevitae and ONVZ, among others.
Following the intake appointments, an application to your health insurer may therefore be required to determine whether the treatment qualifies for reimbursement under your policy conditions. We support clients with any prior authorisation application. Treatment can begin once authorisation has been approved.
Rates
The following rates apply to the different components of the rTMS treatment programme:
- Intakes (pre-intake, psychiatric consultation and on-site intake): one-time fee of €400
- rTMS session: €150 per session
- Extended session (rTMS + psychotherapy): €200 per session
rTMS International exclusively provides insured care. Reimbursement depends on your health insurer, policy conditions and indication. The mandatory deductible applies.
rTMS no-show fee
If you are unable to attend an appointment or need to make a last-minute change, please let us know as soon as possible. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance or do not attend your appointment, we charge a €50 fee. This policy helps us manage our schedule carefully and keep treatment time available. We appreciate you contacting us in good time to avoid unnecessary costs.

Frequently asked
If you’re dealing with treatment-resistant depression and wish to qualify for full reimbursement, a referral from your GP or psychiatrist is required.
However, if you prefer to receive treatment anonymously without your GP or health insurer being informed of your condition, no referral is needed. In that case, too, the condition must be a treatment-resistant depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
On the contact page, below the contact form, you can find the current waiting list for each location.
rTMs is a technique that was introduced in the late 1990s as a treatment for depression. Since then, scientific and clinical research has been conducted to determine the safety of the treatment and to investigate the most effective protocols. It has been established that rTMS is a safe method that, for a large proportion of clients, contributes to the reduction of depression and / or compulsive complaints. Various publications show that clients with the “therapy resistant” diagnosis responded positively to treatment with rTMS. rTMS has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) since 2008 and since 2017 a number of Dutch health insurance companies have reimbursed treatment under the supplementary insurance.
rTMS treatment is generally well tolerated and has few to no side effects. You will sit in the treatment chair, and the coil that delivers the magnetic pulses will be placed against your head. These magnetic pulses stimulate specific areas of the brain. Some people may experience mild tension headaches after the session. To prevent this, you may choose to take a paracetamol beforehand.
